Remote teams

A standup for remote and distributed teams spread across timezones

A team scattered across timezones cannot all be awake for the same fifteen minutes. Donelane does not try to find one. Each person posts what they finished when their own day ends, and the record holds together without anyone changing their sleep for a meeting.

The digest arrives in each team's own morning

The morning digest and the reminder both fire on the team's own timezone, not on one hour picked for wherever the account happens to have been created. A team eight hours ahead of another still gets its email at breakfast, not at midnight.

A done stays on the day it happened

Whoever posts a done files it under the day they finished the work. That day does not move afterwards — not for a teammate reading the feed twelve hours later, and not for anyone checking back a week after that. Nobody has to read the feed at any particular moment for it to make sense.

Reply from your inbox, whenever that is

Replying to the digest or the reminder posts the line straight from your inbox — no app to open, no channel to be logged into. That means nobody on the team has to be awake at the same time as anyone else to add to the record.

Catching up on the days you were asleep

The team feed pages back day by day, showing everyone's dones for each day it lands on. Catching up on what the rest of the team did while you were asleep is a matter of paging through it rather than asking someone to retype it in chat.

Meetings are a separate question

This page is about the clocks; the case for dropping the standup meeting itself is on the async standup tool page.
